Ross Sutherland progress to the semi final of regional bowl with a convincing win over Fraserburgh RFC
Ross Sutherland progressed to the Semi-final of the BT Caledonia Regional Bowl North at the weekend with a convincing 73-7 win over Fraserburgh RFC and in doing so a step closer to a dream day out at Murrayfield.
Ross started the game strong knowing that this was a cup game with the visitors being a league below and would be keen for the scalp of a team from the league above, but in reality the game was over within the first 20 minutes with Ross running in 4 unanswered converted tries. Fraserburgh came up with a big pack and were asking questions of the Ross forwards but the away side struggled to cope with the flair and pace of the Ross backs. The first try on 10 minutes came through a delicate chip through the boot of John Mann playing at 10 for the day with club captain Ali Kennedy away. The chip kick was collected by winger Kenny Horfield to score in the corner. John Mann added the extras for a 7-0 lead The 2nd try of the game minutes later came through another typical run jinxing run from full-back Gareth Braddick who picked up a loose ball just inside the Ross half carve through the Fraserburgh defence to score with John Mann adding the extras. 14 – 0 On the 15minute mark flanker Chris Whatt got his first for the season with a quick pick and go form the base of the ruck that cought the visiting side napping to run in untouched under the posts, John Mann adding a simple kick 21-0 On the 20minute mark centre Ross Mellis got Ross Sutherland forth again another strong run from the center to get his first of 3 for the day, John Mann adding the conversion for a 28-0 lead. The next 20minutes seen Ross Mellis and Kenny Horsfield get there second trys of the game with John Mann not being able to add the extras. 38 – 0 But just before the half Fraserburgh hit back with a converted try of their own through a powerful run from there centre to power over the line taking 2 Ross defenders with him for what would prove to be there only score of the game. To bring the score at half time to 38-7 The second half would see the home side run riot and stretch further in the lead. Fraserburgh were sowing great fighting spirit but there defence was starting to tire from the relentless Ross attack. Ross would run in a further 5 trys for the half through Gareth Braddick and Chris Whatt bagging there second of the game with John Mann adding the conversion 52-7. Ross Mellis showed his great pace again to get his hat-trick of tries, John Mann adding the extras 59-7 Kenny Horsfield was not to be out done and soon grabbed his third of the game when he got on the end of his own chip through for his third of the game, David Kennedy adding the conversion 66-7 And Tom Bannerman would get on the end of a great team try involving both forwards and back for the final score of the game with David Kennedy again adding the conversion. Final score 73-7 Team Manager Stuart Mack added; “The whole team did great today in what could have been a banana skin of a fixture but to have sealed the win really by the first half shows great commitment and attitude by the boys. The second half we kept the pressure and intensity which was good to see. We have areas we need to improve for the semi-final but with the Autumn break will give us an opportunity to address these areas” Ross-Sutherland will now enter an Autumn break with no fixture being played during the month of November but traing will continue and the league will start again on the 2nd December with an away trip to Aberdeen Grammer 2XV.
