Third defeat in a row with a second half collapse
Ross Sutherland fell to a third defeat in a row, as a second half collapse seen a clinical Gairioch side run in a 46 - 13 win.
It was always going to be a tough match against a strong home team. But Ross Sutherland cause was not helped by two late morning call offs.
But is was Ross Sutherland that got the first points of the game, with a penalty being awarded to Ross in the Garioch 22 John Mann stepping up to put the visitors in the lead for what would be the only time in the game. 0 -3
From there Ross looked well organised in the early exchange's with solid defending and forming varies attacks. But basic errors were leading to turn over ball and the visitors were unable to add to their lead.
Garioch were starting to put pressure on the Ross defence and with Ross Sutherland being penalised at the lineout the home side were able to bundle over from the Ross 5meter line form a penalty for their first points of the game and added the extras to take the lead. 7 -3
Ross then replied with another penalty through John Mann taking it to 7-6. But again Ross were unable to win their own lineout again being penalised. Garioch caught the Ross forwards sleeping to take a quick penalty for their 2nd try of the game the conversion was missed the home side going into the break with a 12 -6 lead.
The second half was a different story. Ross would have been hoping to improve on there first half performance but a loose kick in midfield straight to the Garioch full-back and with a broken field in front of him he carved through the Ross defence to run in the corner. The home would then score again in quick succession a loose pass would find its way into the garioch winger’s hands again to run in the corner. Both conversions were missed but put the home side in to a 22 - 6 point lead with in the first 10minutes of the half.
With only one replacement Ross Sutherland were starting to tire and unforced errors meant the visitors were struggling to get back into the game. Gairoich went from strength to strength running in another four unanswered try’s. With two being converted Ross found themselves 46 -6 down with 15 minutes still left on the clock.
But Ross managed to rally with some attacking phases leading to a penalty in the Garioch 10 meters. And it was Ross forward Aonghas "Bear" MacIver that would have the final word capping of a man of the match display and bundling over from close range for the visitors first try of the day and his first of the club, with the extras being added by John Mann. Final score 46 -13.
Captain Ali Kennedy added, “It is always a hard game away to Garioch and we competed really well in the first half, we could not maintain that level in the second half and a combination of basic error and lack of subs ultimately cost us the match. We have a lot to improve on for next week at home to Aberdeen University Medics but I’m confident the players will step up to the mark”.
