By David Kennedy
Ross Sutherland win Jack Henderson and secure first bonus win of the season.
Ross Sutherland claimed there first Jack Hendeson victory since 2009 with a bonus point victory over Highland 2's.
The home side were looking to improve on last weeks promosing start and had the better of the early stages of pressure with vital yards being made by an onslaght of varying attacks from both fowards and backs.
Ross forward continued were they left off last week dominating the scrum early on and winning and early penalty. It was kicked for the corner as Ross looked to build more presure in the Highland 22. But Ross were unable to win there own line out and highland were able to clear there lines.
Ross continued to build the pressure but it was Highland that were to cross the white wash first. A scrum was conceded on the Ross 22. Highland won quick ball a broke quickly down the blind side with some neat hands and missed tackles allowed the Highland srum half in the corner for the first points of the game. With the extras being added from a tight angle putting the visitor into a 0 - 7 lead.
With both team growing in to the game and was looking like it was going to be an even contest. It was the home side that would get the next score. Ross found themselves again in the highland 22 and defending a line out. With good presure from the Ross forward, slow ball managed to finds its way to the highland stand-off who was unable to hold on to the pass as the ball spilled to the grown Ross captain and stand off Ali Kennedy was first to react diving on the ball for Ross Sutherlands first try of the game. John Mann was able to add the extra to level the game 7 - 7
From there Ross were building in confidences and boasting a team with only one change from the week before were starting to click. Ross did not half to wait long for there second try of the game with the end of the first half approahing Ross again won there own scrum in the visitors half a slick backs move split the highland midfield the ball ended up in the hands of flying fullback Gareth Braddick who showed great pace and feet to beat 2 defenders to go over. John Mann again adding the extras in which was proving to be a red hot day with the boot.
The message at half time must have been more of the same and keep up the pressure, and it was the hot boot of John Mann again to get the first points of the half. With what must have been the first Ross attack of the half the centre recived the ball inside 22 in front the points to pop over a quick thinking drop goal 17 - 7 to Ross.
The waves of Ross attackes were sarting to trouble a tiring Highland defence and it would be the fresh legs of Ruaridh Waugh who would grab the home sides third try. Very much a try made for and by the forward, a rumbiling forwads pick and go attck making yard after yard with picking up close to the line the roming back row showed great strength to power over. John Mann again converting. 24 - 7
Ross managed to get the bonus point try on 70mins and it was thorough outside centre Ross Mellis. One of the shining lights from last season for Ross was taking that form into the start of this season with a tried broken field the midfield mistro recived the ball just inside the Highland half with it all still to do he went on a classic jinkie run beating several defenders and showing a clean pair of heels to run in for an outstanding solo try. John Mann did not miss the kick to bag a 100% record with the boot for the day bringing the final score to 31-7 and in doing so retaining the Jack Henderson for the first time in 7 years.
It was a much improved preformance from Ross Sutherland with vastly reduced errors and the penelty count and a much improved line out form last week.
Jack Henderson winning Captain Ali Kennedy added " Its great to get my hands on this trophy the lads all played great today, Its a long season ahead but early preformaces are showing promise and we can only look to build on that and hopefully get better each week"
