Stags Make it Two Wins On The Bounce

By

Ross-Sutherland made it 2 home wins on the bounce as they backed up last week’s win with a comfortable bonus point victory over Deeside Rugby.

Ross-Sutherland made it 2 home wins on the bounce as they backed up last week’s win with a comfortable bonus point victory over Deeside Rugby.
The home-side started comfortably with a solid opening 20 minutes, controlling the scrums and set piece in the early exchanges. Some powerful running gained good territory for the Stags. Eventually fan’s favourite John Reid opened the scoring from 3 meters out after some commanding ball retention from the front five inside Deeside’s 22 led the Deeside defence being exposed. Full back John Mann slotted the conversion to make the score 7-0 and send the home side into an early lead.
The stags continued to press the opposition, dominating possession, but Deeside rallied and the few times they had the ball looked dangerous in attack and strong at the break down. However, the Stags were more dominant, controlling the territory and playing their rugby deep inside the Deeside half. Deeside continued to be pressed and this pressure added to the penalty count for the away side. With an advantage being played after Deeside had strayed offside. Captain, Ali Kennedy took the opportunity to hit home a drop goal and keep the score ticking over, putting Ross-Sutherland into a 10-0 lead.
Again, Deeside looked menacing, when they had the ball in hand but Ross Sutherland had simply too much power up front. As a scrum was awarded on the Deeside 5 meter line the forwards dominated the scrum and Tom Bannerman picked up from the base, to score a try and make the score 15-0 to the Stags.
Penalties again began to mount for Deeside, with another penalty awarded after another an infringement in the rug, John Mann struck to make the score a comfortable 18-0 going into half time.
The 2nd half kicked off with Deeside enjoying a spell of possession, poor defence cost the stags as the away side pulled the score back to 18-5, missing the subsequent conversion. Deeside were not out of the game as Ross-Sutherland seemed to be backing off in the one on one tackles. But Ross were certainly not backing off in the scrum, a feature throughout the season, and with referee awarding another scrum in the 5, the Ross forwards disintegrated the Deeside pack, the ref had enough and awarded a penalty try to the home side. Pushing them into a 25-5 lead.
Deeside continued to threaten and after some poor defending from the home side, they took full advantage, with their scrum half breaking to score under the posts the conversion was added and the score line was reduced to make it 25-12. Deeside continued to dominate and looked to be coming right back into the game, straight after the re-start. Their imposing 2nd row made a great break down the wing and looked certain for a try, but a fantastic recovering tackle from veteran prop Kevin Drain saved the home sides blushes.
The stags hit back and Tom Bannerman, went over after some powerful running, to replicate the brace of tries he go last week. John Mann, hit the conversion again to make the score 32-12 and secure the bonus point for the home side.
Club captain Ali Kennedy commented on the performance; ‘It was strange game, we achieved everything we wanted, getting the win and picking up a bonus point. We had a big squad and were actually turning boys away, which is great for us and the club. I thought the front row were excellent as was Johnny at full back. I think we could have played better and I expected a little more to be honest. Our defence, in particular, was quite frankly poor and that’s down to attitude, so a little bit disappointing. However, I don’t want to put a downer on things. We got the win we are a young team, we are learning all the time and I just want us to improve our performance against Fraserburgh RFC next weekend.’
